I think nothing is really 100% perfect for securing things on a web server, if you want it 100% safe do not put it on a web server

htaccess is not that unsecure unless you leave it writable.

If you are worried about people being able to browse your web directories. Try putting a blank index.html file in the directory. Not in your root though.

Personally, I just use my cpanel and use the Password Protect Directories I've never had a problem with that..

BUT! You could try making the CHMOD 000 then when you want someone to see it change it to 666 or 777 which ever you want and then when they are done change it back to 000... I used to do this with family pictures I put on my site
