Default Crashed Hardrive

So my computer just crashed... or my first primary laptop I mean. Its a Emachine laptop I have had for 4 years. I was doing some heavy duty deleting.. when all of the sudden, I get the press alt+crtl+del.. and what happened nothing. the same thing came up... and I can hear the hard drive grinding.

Question, any chance I can actually recover my files of this dying hardrive.. I cant boot up at all... and im considering using knoppix to see if I can even get to the hard drive.. any help is greatly appreciated.

Netty,

You can get a laptop to IDE converter and plug your lap top hard drive into your tower or desktop system then you should be able to pull the files over that you need to, though some may be currupted and you will not be able to access them.

Hi, in case you are still working on your crashed Hard Drive, here are some ideas:

Acronis and lots of other software offer data recovery.

But I would pluf my small laptop hardrive (easy enough to remove from laptop) and read it outside the laptop either on an IDE adaptor as mentionned above or in a casing especially made for that (they go for about 30$ and are USB2 withou having to use a power supply) You should be able to recover your files that way unless the motor is dead or the disk is "really" damaged, but in my experience, it does not happen that often.

Good luck

Me again, hoping you have recovered data and that still, I am not writing this for nothing,

There are many other ways to get your data (100%) back, even from a DEAD hard drive. Some of them cheap some of them not.

The most extreme being a Clean Room (sometimes called a White Room) where they will "reconstruct" an identical hard drive using the extracted disks from yours. (this is an extremely simplified explanation). It's a highly succesful method but does not come cheap as it will cost you over a thousand bucks (unless you have contacts that actually have contacts etc.).

Good luck again.

Ciao
