Default XP won't boot

I helping the parents out and their computer had some spyware, I removed it but when I rebooted the machine it wouldn't get past the XP log in screen (or rather the screen just prior to it) I got stuck there several times... both in normal mode AND Safe mode... is there anything that can be done, before I attempt to reinstall?

maybe u mess up the registry (or a spyware did).
there is a few things u can do.
1. press F8 when pc booting (after the screen with memory and drives)
and select to boot with previously working settings
2. try to repair the installation with the cd from xp
3. speak out loud th F..... word
u can try to safe boot with command line but u must have a degree in IT to make it work ;-P

I figured using the &*#$ would do the most good, but even that didn't. Not sure what in the registry could have messed it up that bad to not boot. I tried everything to get to ANY boot mode. Nothing. And a repair didn't work either. Reinstall did though but now I have to remove all my old programs and reinstall them. What a pain!

Unfortunetly I can not post links here, but look up a Windows XP Recovery Console in google and restore the system to the last back up. See if this helps.

Or if you have your XP CD go to setup by pressing F2 and then change the boot order to load the CD Rom 1st then walk through the reinstall process.
Theres much more to it but that is the basis to get you started.

The first time i did this i borrowed my friends lap top and used the internet it walk me through it step by step

If it freezes or restarts at the windows XP boot screen, try resetting your BIOS settings on your motherboard. Also do as the person above me recommended. Boot from your CD-ROM drive and reinstall XP. You may also want to check the physical connection from your hard drive to your motherboard. It may have become loose somehow.

Remember, blame it on the spyware, don't say you messed it up! Just say, a virus activated when I tried to delete it and then it got into the (technical word here) and messed up the boot sequence. They will have no idea what your saying and just agree with you

It might be a hard drive boot error. Try pressing F8 when booting and do disk check. That might fix your problem.

I found that if you leave the windows XP installation disc in the drive while booting that the operating system sometimes fetches some system files from the disc, has saved my skins a few times.

What has properly happened is that the spyware or virus had attached its self to a system file, you really should of tried repair files instead of delete virus/spyware.
