Default Windows XP Password?

Ok I have two laptops, So I turn on my other laptop today click on the on button and it takes me to the screen to choose a user.

I click on the user and it ask's me for a password I have never added a password to this account, so i try the other user name same thing... needs a password??? Now I can't log into my computer at all.

The bad part is that the laptop is a AVERATEC, so this computer doesnt come with a CD, all the files if you want to re-install windows are on the hard drive... what to do... any help or any ideas greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to log in as Administrator?

Boot the computer and right before the Windows Loading Screen comes (the blue or green row) press the F8-key.
You will be able to choose different options. Start in Safe Mode. If you're lucky you will be able to log in with the Administrator account. But only if your Administrator account is still without a password.

When that worked, you can edit your user passwords in the Control Panel.

The password can be changed using some third party programs that can modify the sam files windows stores his passwords in.

h t t p : / / h o m e . e u n e t . n o / ~ p n o r d a h l / n t p a s s w d

Sorry but I can't post URLs.

Tough luck me frient. How did your accounts have passwords without you assign passwords to yhem?
Maybe someone else have access to your laptop?
Anway... first try to click where it says to remind you the password and see what it says. Then in the screen where you choose the user press twice ALT+CTRL+DEL (don't worry it doesn't reboot your pc) then it shows an alternative logon screen. Give 'Administrator' as the user and nothing (hopefully) as password. It should anter you as an admin. Then create a new user with admin privillage and voila!!!

Hope this will solve the problem.

I had CA antivirus installed, and from a story I read... the antivirus program mistook another file for a virus, therefore it deleted the file.. and affected windows xp... which wouldnt let you log in... as for why they had passwords... dont know, I just re-installed everything and password protected all the user accounts.

But I fixed it. thanks for the help

Let Windows boot normaly and when you have to choose a user, do not. Instead, ctr-alt-delete, twice in a row and you'll get the prompt where you'll use administrator as a user name and, if you are lucky there will not be a password. Hit return and you are admin and can change the passwords (or remove) of any users on the machine.

If there is a password then there are a hundred tools out there to overide all passwords, even admin in Windows.

Good luck
