Default Zombies continue to chase Windows PCs

Zombies continue to chase Windows PCs
By Joris Evers, CNET News.com

Malicious remote control software continues to be one of the biggest threats to Windows PCs, according to a new Microsoft security report.

More than 43,000 new variants of such insidious software were found in the first half of 2006, making them the most active category of malicious software, Microsoft said in a Security Intelligence Report published Monday. In June Microsoft also flagged zombies as the most prevalent threat to Windows PCs.

"Attackers, with financial gain in mind, are clearly concentrating a significant amount of development focus on this category of malware," Microsoft said in the report.

Of 4 million Windows PCs found to be infected with some kind of malicious software in the first half of this year, about 2 million were running malicious remote control software, Microsoft said.

Given this -- I believe in using multiple tools, and the best I can find.....

I just bought "SpywareDetector"... and IMO.... it's very good

I've been (and will continue) to use
  • AVG
  • SystemMechanic Pro Spyware detection
  • ewido,
  • adaware,
  • spywareblaster,
  • trojan-hunter,
  • Spybot search and destroy,
  • hijack this, ..
  • a2-hijack free....
  • the Cleaner
all off them left me with a single minor but reoccuring trojan....

this is after updating all the programs and definitions, , booting into safe mode, and running them....then they find the nasty little things, delete them, report the drive clean and then rebooting....

and it was back.... not a huge deal, but annoying... couldn't get rid of it, couldn't find what was re-creating it in the registry.... arrrggghhhh

then I ran "SpywareDetector".....

It found 110 worms on my machine.... stuff that EVERYTHING ELSE (WHICH I HAD USED MULTIPLE TIMES) HAD REPEATEDLY MISSED.... and since I've been running SpywareDetector as a resident shield, my drives have been remarkably clean

the other programs report things clear as well..... been running it for about 4 days solid, and --so far-- nothing I didn't want has come down the pipe.

$30, pretty good.... given the list of software I tested it against, how much it found that they missed, and how clean the drives have been staying.
