Default Free Firewall

Are there any software firewalls for Linux? ( Free ones ) Or can I use IPTables? I heard about it from a mate but then he will only do it for me if I pay him And I am a poor guy still trying to survive college... Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Actually the most basic would be to use IPchains or IPTables to secure.
Or you can try buying a hardware firewall for your unit.

If you are not familure with IPtables, and do not want to learn the commands, you can use the free, and very hand APF wich links into IPtables for you, giving you a couple text files to edit to set it up, and to view the IPs that are being blocked, very usefull for the command line hater!

Just google APF!

Just use iptables. It comes with most distos.

If you want to cheat on building your ruleset check out fwbuilder (dot) org . It's a gui utility for creating rules for more linux based firewalls and others. Even Cisco Pix!

Hmmm. Well thats quite a list for a free firewall. You may have a hard time gettig all of them, but almost all of them are available in IPCopDOTorg I use it and find it one of the better ones I have tried. my biggest complaint is the use a color scheme to denote the interfaces which I suppose is to help everyday users but makes me crazy. i.e. Red = External Interface, Green=Internal, Orange= DMZ, Blue=WLAN (or jsut use as another DMZ) that and the fact that out of the box you only can use use these four interfaces (NIcs) . There are addons available as well. One cd, you install on a PC / server with no OS on it, run an X config program and once done can manage from a browser etc.

If Sunbelt and Kerio's firewall is available for Linux than that does the trick.
