I am using proftpd - All users are "jailed" to their home directory.

However, I may want to allow certain users access to /home/shared - I tried creating a symlink in their home directory which works fine when logged onto the console but FTP gives this error: 550 shared: No such file or directory

I am looking for an ftp solution - any ideas?

Hi -
If your "jail" is done with chroot, then that's why the symlink doesn't work -- when the root directory of the FTP server process ends up being that user's home directory, so a symlink to /home/shared ends up not pointing at any existing file or directory thus the error.

You can bind-mount the same directory into multiple places --

mount --bind /home/shared /home/user1
mount --bind /home/shared /home/user2
mount --bind /home/shared /home/user3

It works like a hardlink to a directory. regards

i tried it and of course it works, but that trick can also be used to mount the symlinks on the startup by adding this line to fstab (/etc/fstab):


and that's it!

Hi,

I had similar problem with symlink in ProFTP. I want to symlink a specified sub directory from user home directory to other directory. I've tested your suggestion above, but it seems didn't work for my case (or for me--perhaps )

i.e:

I want to symlink:

/usr/home/user/subdir

with:

/data/subdir

How do i suppossed to deal with that?

And one more question regarding ProFTP or UNIX Shell.

Can we configure any rules so we can deny access certain FTP User from specified IP's except from it's own host.

i.e:

user botaksetan can only login to FTP server if he using his computer with ip 10.33.37.19, otherwise his login will be denied.

Or, user botaksetan can't login from IP 192.168.195.18, but he can access FTP Server if he used other IP.
