Default SSL certificate help

Can any of point me to a SSL for dummies guide?

I want to set up a secure server to email me credit card details form customers as I am wanting to move from a payment processor to a merchant account.

Obviously i need to encrypt the emails hence SSL being the answer? Yeah?

Just wondering if you are running your own server now and is it windows or linux based if so. Or are you currently hosting with someone? I host one of my sites with allwebco and ssl is included with the hosting so there is no extra charge.
