Green Hosting
Does anyone know of Web hosting companies that use any clean, renewable energy sources (Green Hosting) to power their data centers? Like solar power, wind power?
I know the question is a long shot here, but if anyone knows I'd like to know for a news article that we're doing.
thanks

Re: Green Hosting
I'm not sure if it is what you were looking for, but I noticed that in October Rackspace UK announced they would be adopting a green hosting policy and would not only be planting trees to become more carbon neutral, but they would also be looking into ways to improve their energy efficiency. I expect this will get a number of other companies to review their use of fossil fuels, and it can only be good news for those who worry about global warming.

Exactly.... It's the entire energy footprint of the hosting company, alternative energy sources, efficiency of building energy use, (down to how the carpeting was made, how the furniture was made, lighting installation.... and how can it all be re-processed; do they recyled paper on their business cards.... How do they dispose of old equipment? --(I donate mine to an orphanage in Africa.)
But..... For some of us... This is a LOT more than a "trend".... I think this is a promotable, saleable idea, worthy of support

Re: Green Hosting
There was an interesting article published on the Information Age website concerning this issue of green policies. The article is entitled Right On?

Re: Green Hosting
Excellent article, thanks for posting it.
In fact I learned that Google ... "has been at the forefront of green technology initiatives. The company has built new premises in Mountain View, California that make extensive use of solar panelling on its roofs – the largest customer-owned solar electricity system in the world – in an attempt to cut its carbon footprint. Google is expected to save nearly $400,000 per year on its electricity consumption."
Full disclosure...I use Google a lot but I own no stock.

Pretty interesting. We could always put our sites their to encourage companies to become green.

Re: Green Hosting
Yes I checked them out. Their servers, offices and data center operate entirely on renewable solar energy. And their hosting packages are reasonably priced.

I noticed that Rackspace has just announced they will be opening a new UK data centre that runs on "environmentally friendly energy". With so much competition out there for customers, such initiatives must attract anybody with an interest in green issues.
