There are millions of companies on the net who advertise themselves to be the perfect web company, but only few of them are REALLY proficient web hosting companies. In the world of advertising tactics and gimmicks, few good companies get overshadowed by the rest. There is no sure shot way to determine the perfect web hosting company .

is it possible to find a good company ?

Hi,
Try to scan their websites, their web content, and their site layout.

Compare between the hosting company websites, their features, analyze their costs read their content and then decide which is the best hosting company.

Try to get the opinions of the hosting company you choose from various acquaintance, business associates, friends etc.

While searching for a good hosting company, look for a clean, uncluttered and organized website. Every information should be layered in user-friendly and easy interface.
Drop A Ticket: The web hosting company looks good and reasonably priced but what about their service, their response time ? If they respond fast with satisfactory solution, you have found a reliable web hosting company.

If vailable , go on a free trial: The final test which will determine the reliability of the hosting company.
Bandwidth problems: Some hosting companies support unlimited bandwidth, but for large amount don’t just go for unlimited, fix a bandwidth as per your need as to avoid conflict if any.

Do they help you grow: Your website may be small now, but it may grow tomorrow Clarify these details how they are going to help you when you expand in future.

Reviews about a host in the forums would help you allot to know about a host in their downtime, support & service. Looking into their proven records and sharing their experiences to customers from forums would help the best to know about a host.
Usually, you determine whether a company is good or not by looking at the reviews other users give them. To test for yourself, you can email their support team, asking questions and see how fast they reply you.. and how good their answers are.

I agree with the comments about testing the customer service ticket tracking systems. Their response time is a good indicator of theri internal processes. Not the response to time to their automated email, but the one that actually answers your questions. Test them. Then decide.

We test for Uptime and WebSpeed of shared hosting accounts and Uptime, WebSpeed, CPU Speed, and Disk Speed of VPS accounts. We're considering adding a customer service metric also. It seems like it would be quite valuable based on the earlier posts.

I found doing a search on company at Web Hosting Talk could save you a lot of problems. They have a ton of information and a lot of great people that can help with almost anything.

One thing I look for is a Community Forum. If a webhost does not have a Forum, I simply move on to the next.

You can learn a lot of info about a webhost that isn't afraid to have it's customers having open discussions in a Public forum.
