I have used the following hosting companies: http://powweb.com/ and http://aplus.net/

Powweb offers only unix hosting, but it is cheaper (US based servers, $7,77/month, 12GB, 300GB traffic/month, etc.)
Aplus offers everything (US based servers), their customer support is better 24/7 phone and chat, but the services are a little bit expensive.
You can review both.

Directories help, but watch out for the ratings you see there as many of those directories sell the ranking to hosting companies.
