How do you tell where a site is hosted? I have always wondered this. Is it possible to tell?

I'm not sure if you the information on where a site is hosted is readily available, but where the domain name is registered is and so is the contact information for that person. Go to http://www.whois.sc/

There you can lookup any domain and find out where it was registered and the owner's info.

yes, you will have to whois the domain, that should get you started.

Yeah, if you do a WHOIS on the domain, there's a couple things to look for. For example, if you go to one of my personal sites, fixago.com (don't go though, nothing there, just a testing site), you'll find some good info in the nameservers. WHOIS.NET is a URL that comes to mind for checking out that kind of info. Anyways, my info comes up with:

ns1.crucialwebhost.com
ns2.crucialwebhost.com
ns3.crucialwebhost.com

Letting me know I have 3 nameservers. Now, sometimes you might be with a company and the URL is different from the company you signed up with, meaning they are a sub-company of someone else. If I goto the URL listed, Crucialwebhost.com, it's the same site I signed up with.

That's how you can tell who you signed up with.

there was a FireFox plugin with auto WHOIS , search on mozila.org

Another way for you to check the site's host (or sometimes upstream provider, eg. dedicated server provider, datacenter, bandwidth provider, etc) is through Who is Hosting This?. Try it and have fun.
