Default Free Hosting Funding

Ive been wanting to fire up a free hosting service for some time but of course it cost's money , i would like to know a good way to fund this and what are users really looking for in a free host? I have some ideas of what a user would look for as of no ads , good ammount of features, domaind and sub domain hosting, cPanel usually and well this costs cash . What would the best way be to fund it? I don't believe in forcing ads and i don't really like the idea of ads on my own site, maybe a "post to get hosting" kind of deal with ads on the forum maybe... Im not sure maybe someone has a better way.

Ads are the best way to do it, like it or not. Even when many hate it, it is the best way to go around paying the bills for a free webhost.

The people want a website and wasting their time making them post on a forum regularly would turn them off. It will work initially, but shortly after they will bail on you.

I feel your pain ..lol

You know, I always wanted to be a free web host too but to be honest with you, the more I look in to it and deal with other free web hosts that are giving me free accounts and such, I see that it can be a big pain in the butt!

Like there are all kinds of responsibilities being a host. You have to back up your user's sites reguarly, you have to know a lot about security, or some bozo will hack you and screw everything up! ... I would love to do it, but unfortunetly there are too many idiots out here on the net that are out to do pointless destruction to other people's property. So if you are going to do it, I think you will have to know a lot about server security measures and such before anything else because when it comes down to it .. what people want most is there website to be online.

hmm, I wanted to do this a couple of years ago as well.

Well advertisement will be your main revenue that will pay for your hosting. You can also set up a system like gmail.. that the user can only sign up if invited by somebody already on the service. Also refferal links on your website is what will also draw some income.

Nothing in life is for free. If you have to pay the bills you have to find ways of raising funds. One way to avoid ads is start a donation campaign. Maybe some more affluent users will be willing to pay for some of the costs. Another way to raise money is to offer a free domain for every 10th user registering or something like that, so that you can defray costs with what others pay. I don't know if this helps but it's my suggestion.

I don't agree in forcing ads as well. I think one time posting will do it. Let's say after 50 post or something. Just my 2 cents

i think the best free hosts are professional hosts anyway, they just decide that they've got some space left over an ddo everyone a good turn. hosts like this last longer.

there's also Free Web Hosting with PHP & MySQL, No Ads, Cpanel - Trap17 , free hosting (and a good package!) for posting regularly on their forms.

How about a weekly newsletter? In order to get free hosting, they have to sign up for a newsletter. Then just sell ads in the newsletter. Once you have a good amount of subscribers you should be able to generate an income. It all comes down to how much your overhead is per customer.
