Default FTP Problems

Everytime I try to connect to FTP on my server it would return a message saying "421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection" SO I tried using another machine at another location and tried. But the same thing happened again... Is there some configuration errors with my server? Where can I check?

you should try and check out the settings of the ftp software you're using first.

then, make sure your username and password are correct. case sensitive stuff there (depending on the server).

don't use windows explorer. this one just never works sometimes. go download sometime like smartftp from smartftp.com .. it works very well.

oh and, make sure your server settings are right this is very important. that might be the real problem as it sometimes is in a lot of cases

Hey there

I get the same error message
Quote:
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.

Server: Windows XP Professional (don't ask me why... it wasn't my idea)
Client: SLES 9

I can connect to the server but only until I send a command like "dir" or try to transfer a file I get the 421 error message.
The weirdest thing: I tried it from a Windows 2003 Server too and it worked there!

Here my FTP transaction try from the Linux Client:

Quote:
Linux:~ # ftp x.x.x.x
Connected to x.x.x.x.
220 Microsoft FTP Service
Name (x.x.x.x:root): user
331 Password required for user.
Password:
230 User user logged in.
Remote system type is Windows_NT.
ftp> dir
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection.
ftp>

Anyone got an idea? I think it is a misconfiguration on the Windows XP FTP Server because i can connect and transfer files to other FTP-Servers with the Linux client without any problems.

Edit:
Argh, believe me or not but I have a possible solution for that problem. Simply type the command "epsv off" after you just connected to the host. After that I could start my transfers.
