Wireless Internet is safe once you apply WEP -Wired Equivalent Privacy-encryption of data. But it has less security since it is easy to break the code by hacker. There is WPA encryption which is safer than WEP.

Answer is that it's really not safe to connect to an unknown open wireless network, particularly if you're going to be transferring any kind of sensitive information. The reason would be, all information sent over an unsecured wireless network (which doesn't require a WPA or WPA2 security code) is information that is sent in plain sight.. That's why, Just by connecting to an open network you are potentially opening your computer to anyone else on that wireless network...
