First Optimization: Learn how to spell

Second Optimization: Open Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and see how much physical memory you have available and processor usage during ordinary tasks.

Third Optimization: Search processes list for any suspicious items or processes taking up large amounts of memory

Fourth Optimization: Use a good AV program like Kaspersky with a spyware program like Spy Sweeper to kill any virus or spyware that may be infecting your system.

Fifth Optimization: If all else fails, format and reinstall Windows.

Lot's of good advice on spyware, etc....

.... but number one.... spend $50 bucks and at least double your RAM....

with the amount you have.... Just running XP and one app (say firefox) I bet you have to go to the pagefile all the time, and if your computer has a slower drive --it can be frustratingly slow.... I can't imagine trying to run XP and do anything productive (or fun) with it with that little RAM....
