Random Access Memory in short RAM is also known to be the Cache memory. It is that memory of PC which gets erased once you turn off the PC.It stores only those data which is needed for a particular task at the running stage. So, the more RAM you induce into your system, the better is it's performance.

That's for sure that RAM affects the processing speed. The more is the RAM, the more will be the processing speed. I have 128mb, and the speed is very bad, but as i upgrade it to 1GB, it's working fabulous. So upgrade your's also.
