since you are having low memory when you installed the softwares and then you upgraded your memory, the software shud run in good speed now however if it continues to run slowly after 5-6 reboots then it is better to reinstall the software (this thing sometimes happens on old PC's)

Yes memory does affect your system's performance. If you have less memory than you will have problems running your computer and programs. But 1 Gb ram is ok these days for softwares. You should not be having any problems if you have 1 GB ram unless you are playing some games with high graphics.
