Default File Management

I am looking for some advise on the management of many files on a website. I currently use MSFrontpage, but have a security application and a navigation structure using ASP. I need to index these files, assign them to catagories, and have them display on a webpage based on catagory/security settings.

For example, ten files on the site. Five are LEVEL I - SOFTWARE. Two are LEVEL II SOFTWARE. Three are LEVEL III SOFTWARE. Each would display on a seperate page. However, I also need multi-level catagories, which would display maybe the same file link on several different pages, if it was included in other catagories.

Frontpage has a similar feature to this, but once uploaded/downloaded to catagories are lost. With a few hundred files, it becomes a headache to reorganize these.

Is there an indexing program which can be uploaded, which allows for this type of file management?

Any ideas...

Default Re: File Management

Generally, when you have too many files on your website, most people would implement their website using a content management system. A CMS would reduce your headache of organizing your files at multiple hierarchy levels.

Alternatively, if you are considering a site map to index your files, you can use a XML file to create the hierarchy instead of creating physical directories to create hierarchies. If a proper hierarchy already exist in your website starting from the home page, you could use a free utility like sitemapbuilder.net to map out your site as a XML file, which you can use the file to do anything else you want... e.g. building a breadcrumb trail on your webpages.
