Default Browser Compatibility

Do people out here design there sites keeping in mind broswer compatibility.
Online when you look for css, they have css hacks for IE4,5,6 NS4,5,6 and FF.

Do we have to take so much care that we have to design our sites to be compatible with IE4!! I wonder how many people use it anyways

IMO, I'd create my design to be compatible to only 2 browsers, IE6 and FF.
Is there something wrong with that?

Well what you can do is to state a line on your site saying OPtimized for XXX Browser.
FF can be quite limiting when it comes to coding and sometimes don't really pick up some things.

I use Mozilla and there are only a few sites that don't work for it. I understand why people ignore some browsers, because it might restrict what they can do for a small percentage of viewers. I say, have more than one browser. I have IE (which I hate) on my comp in case I need to see a certain site.

When I was trying to upload some work to a website, the buttons would not work for me. I finally downloaded mozilla (someone suggested this) and not only the buttons were there, but the colors were amazing. There were even more buttons that I couldn't see in my aol browser!

Look at your target market. In some cases, it can have very little benefit to optimise for all browsers of all versions. If you're audience is a generally computer literate, then you should be reasonably safe coding for current browser standards. If your audience are likely to be less upto date, lets say, then you may well need to consider a past version or two. We can't all keep everything upto date after all.
