My site is just my little weblog so the site itself is only around 5mb. But I use my account to host things here and there.

Most hosts use the disk allowance as a marketing tool. They advertise gigs of space and oversell their resources on the assumption that 99% of the users will never use their quota, and they are mostly right about the assumption.
If you host lots of images or audio/video files then you will need a lot of space; otherwise, a small account should be enough.

thats exactly right, I have been contemplating using some of the site as offsite storage but not sure if i want to risk the possibility of someone hacking in and seeing it

The cool thing is is that I have dreamhost, and the cool part is your disk and bandwith grow each day. That's pretty cool.
