Hi,
I run a retailed garment shop and can afford little money for advertisement. I’ve been told that hiring a web designer is a costly affair. Can any one tell me some simple steps to build my website from development to publishing on the web without programming?

You can follow the simple steps to create one by yourself.

1. Register a Domain Name www.yourdomainname.com
2. Purchase a web designing tool A4 Desk Pro Flash Website Builder
3. Publish your website through ftp.

Try one of the open source Shopping Cart programs that are out there.

I personally use osCommerce, but you will need some knowledge of php coding.

If you are a complete novice, I would suggest looking at Prestashop. It has a professional look about it, with an easy to use admin back office.

There is a demo on the site, so try it out.

Plus, there is a forum community there that will hopefully help you if you get a problem.

1. You can buy a template at templatemonster.com (or similar site)
OR
2. You can hire a good freelance designer from Romania or India at a site like getafreelancer.com to build the site for you. I have experience working with freelancers from both countries and I can say that I had a pretty good experience and you can get good work done for $10/hour or less. I can recommend specific people if you PM me.

Try to learn about basic HTML and CSS skills there are lots of tutorials on the web that you can read, after that you can follow mayo23's suggestion..

if your want to do web designing without programming you have to try basic HTML.

If you can find a highschool student who has an interest in web development you might be able to get something cheap that you advertise yourself (on business cards, etc).

I remember doing basic sites in highschool for around $200-300. Most of those paid for themselves for the business owners in terms of generating business.

If you are in the USA start out by listing with yellowpages.com. If you have high school kids in and out of your store put up a "Need website!" sign - you can probably get one built for a few bucks. BOB

The answer is an emphatic "yes". As a website designer, you can design websites and if your client needs something that you can't provide, you can always hire a programmer to do those things that you can't or don't have the time for, and work it into the overall price. Most web developers write programs, and have no creative design talent, but can perform the impossible when it comes to completing the programming to what you want. Outsourcing has become a good industry, and finding a programmer that will work with you is not difficult. I've done it a few times, and it has always worked out.

The one thing you will need to do though is write up something in the contract to your client, that states something like you "reserve the right to assign subcontractors to the project to insure the right fit for the job as well as on-time completion".
