Default Designing For Cross Browser Compatibility

Whats the best way to design a web site & have the least amount
of problems with Cross Browser Compatibility issues.

I'm using First Page 2006 & new to web page design.

Also Which html will give me the best results for this
html 4.01 Strict html 4.01 Transitional.

I noticed that someone said to create a table for the whole page

set your tables in % instead.. so width=%100 to fill up the whole screen.. then everyone will be happy..

Any ideas on this.

The best software to use is Dreamweaver, its more flexible with your design needs.

I would use html 4.01 Transitional. it will work best with all browsers.

As for the design aspect, tables are great. But If you want to have less cross-browser problems and more control over design, you want to eventually go into using Div tags.

I currently use tables and divs, but I plan on just using divs in the future.
When you create a design no matter what, it will always look different in other browsers.

All you can really do is test, test, test in as many browsers as possible until things look right in all of them. And as has already been mentioned you should look into using css for your layout instead of tables.

hmm I was just told today to set my website to "strict" not "transitional" did not help though and reseting all my margins to "o" did not help either.
