Question "Error 404" - detected by searchbots?

Hello all. A quick question on SEO:

If I have a custom "Error 404" page, will search engines know that it's an error page, even if it's not explicitly mentioned on the page? Can crawlers detect that they're being served a 404 regardless of its content?

Thanks for any help.
