I think doing your own SEO yourself is the way to go
Yes it takes time and effort but it is under your control if you do it yourself and you save yourself some money

And SEO is really not that hard

Here here! When you hire a cheap lawyer, do you expect great representation? When you hire a cheap painter, how good does the room look? When you want plastic surgery, do you look for the cheapest doctor in town? NO...

For some reason, and I have my theories, people think that cheap SEO is good. I am with you - Cheap SEO is a bad idea. You get what you pay for. This is true in any free market society...

That being said - There are ways to find affordable SEO if you know how to shop. There are certainly *some* parts of the process you can do yourself. But in my experience, people who say "I'll just do it myself" don't really understand the time that is involved and end up not doing it for more than a week or two.... Any good SEO knows that will not get you anywhere.

I disagree with the 99.9 percent of newbies can't do SEO the right way.
I've actually seen self taught people move up the SEO ranks at major marketing firms. And I continue to see junior people try their hand with good results.
