Yeah, I second you on this.
IMO, Having proper and accurate on page optimization give huge boost to any website in SERP's.Good on page optimization reduces off page work as well.

On page optimization includes the following:

Using keywords in title, meta tags such as title and description of the page.
Highlighting keywords in the body text
Using keywords or key phrases as anchor text
Placing keywords at the alt tags of the images
