It is a long time that search engines and specially Google don't pay any attention to keyword meta tag but they still use the description meta tag as the description of the websites on their search result pages. Of course, in most search queries, Google displays a part of the body text that includes the search term. So the description is used in some cases only.

On the other hand, I have seen many web pages that have no description meta tag, ranked properly.
So my question is if description meta tag is still important or has lost its role?
Is it effective in the ranking of the websites?

From what i have heard, having a descriptive metatag helps with Google Ranking with the way that the pages interact with each other and boost the ranking with relevancy, or something akin to that.

I would definitely use it. Of course, that's just my personal opinion and I may be wrong about the Google Rankings. Just trying to help ya out

Hello..

Meta tags still play a big part in SEs... maybe not google but many others still use these and are important as they tell the whole story to those SEs looking for info concerning your site.

I see it as you have nothing to lose by not doing so....

effective or not, IMO, it is still important to have meta tags. this gives people information of what you site is all about. and besides, nothing to lose in placing meta tags
