I’ve read so much on this subject I don’t know where to start anymore,
I was thinking of making promotion todo list then working through it.

I have a brand new website launched today. Not on google or anything

What are the first few things I should do ?

First thing above all is to make sure your Page is targeted for your specific Keywords, and the code is Search Engine Friendly.

Make sure the alt tags are there meta discriptions and so on and so on.

I used sitemap for google it worked fast

The sitemap is very important - makes difference immediately! I don’t know how it worked, but when I submitted my sitemap to Google, somehow Yahoo indexed all my pages /or most of them??!!

I would recommend getting on Top Sites for you category i get lots of traffic from there and search engine optimization. Those 2 should get you started.

good programming, clean URL, sitemap and blog is the fastest way to get indexed. also some links on high PR sites can help.

You can post ads, articles and press release for extra promotions.

IMO the first few things that you should do are:-
Get listed in directories in relavant categories,
Do some research on good keywors and then optimize most popular keywords,
Start link building,and
Register in relavant forums and blogs and start posting there.
