Default Becoming the search engine.

I came across this site selling a program that you can have your own search engine
http://www.ultraseek.com/details/index.html

Each license cost $75K!!

Has anyone have experience with search engine creation and does it really cost that much for a search engine software??

I think, creating a search engine is not a click anymore since most online users prefer to search on the 3 major engines..

tado certainly has a point in regards to searching on the major engines. However, there will always be room for niche directories. These niche directories brings added value to it's users with detailed information that the major engines cannot incorporate.

UltraSeek would be a bit costly for this type of setup but there are a plethora of search engine apps out there with modest prices($99 - 1,000.00 and some free) which will do the job.

I ran a maritime related directory for well over four years with good statistics and was bought out by the competition..

I'd leave search engines to the big boys at google and yahoo and MSN.

Neiche directories and search engines would still work. I saw this googs example, a horror community with its own directeory and forum. Forgot the uRL though.

Its been a habbit for us internet searchers, when it comes to internet searching. We always go to Major SE's(Google,Yahoo,Msn).Cause it gives us reliable information that we need. Maybe in the future those top 3 SE will a thing of the past when a new powerful and reliable SE goes in the market. Who knows? Its just my opinion

allon, take the advice by the guys here... don't waste your time, there are just too many of them around these days and I also only would use the major ones instead of those that are just set up.

But setting up a serarch engine would need a lot of resources and money I guess. Anyone here have any idea the maintainence needed for this? Like servers, hosting / co-lo costs etc etc.

Just to show how inpractical it is.

You got a point there... Those companies would have so much money that to take out the competition, they could just bury me alive with it....
