Default Content versus link exhanges

We are currently running a construction equipment website and are wondering where we should focus our attention.
the site is : http://www.equipmentq.com
As far as free things , is it better to focus on writing industry articles that have keywords linked back to specific pages. The majority of our site uses dynamic pages that have a mod rewrite with very little static pages and no industry articles. i have noticed on a couple static pages that were created that we went right to the top 10 for the keywords.

Would it be better to start a link campaign and use article sites and construction related forums and classifieds ads sites. I figure this will drive up traffic but not sure if the efforts would be worth it. we have looked for one way link sites and got added to a few. We wouldn't consider a links page on our main site but would link exchange on a sister site.

On another note we update regulary but have noticed classifieds sites get picked up within 24 hours when sometimes we have to wait a week for the bot to come back. Is this anything to do with the constant update status of these sites or a very good lnk campaign. We have submitted a site map to reflect our changes so i dont think that is it.

Thanks for any help on this and i know these types of questions have answers sprawled throughout these boards but i wanted to get some personal opinions.

To sum it up :
Better content with static pages or trying to get more links to us. In a dire situation what would you do?

Do incoming links make a difference in how fast your site gets crawled an updated in google?
Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

Content would play a major role in the SEO process as well as link building.

Focus first on content before you build your backlinks. And try to build more relevant one-way backlinks than reciprocal links as the former helps more in terms of SEO.

I agree with them, it is better you focus on the content of your site, before link building. Good luck

Build great content and you'll get the links naturally. Yeah like it's really that simple Seriously though I'd always concentrate on content first.

THanks everyone for the good replies. We have directed our main focus to content with a sub-focus on link building.

I totally agree with this. Having quality and interesting content will surely attract more sites to link with your site..

In short span of time you will have some content on your web site. I will suggest you start also posting small content notes in blog related to your area, forums and publish few articles on different web sites. Try avoiding duplicate contents where ever possible. Word your web site from different location will bring more benefit. Some time it may not be back link counted by Google.
