I want to know the main sources which I can make use of to increase traffic to my site.

I want to know the role backlinks play in bringing quality traffic. Will the use of backlinks help me achieve high traffic or get me a high PR ranking?

What about web directories? Should I opt for an automated service or get it done manually? I hear manually is better, although more tedious and time consuming…

well so far i gain most of my traffic from SEs especially googel... which is a good thing coz thats an organic traffic.. backlinks help to increase your link popularity which also one of the factor to have a high PR.. and yes can also help to have traffic.

Some auto submitter/tools for directory submissions can't read captha's which most large directories requires.. i prefer manual submissions, its more secure and you can monitor/select which directories to submit...

If your budget is less, try to use manual directory submission with free service. Although the review of the site would take long, they will sooner contribute to increase the ranking of your site as well as your link popularity once your site is approved.

Directories are a great way to increase your page rank but in my experience most of them don't generate allot of traffic directly. I've tried allot of automated solutions in the past and in my opinion Digixmas has been the best. It's semi automated,free and submits to a little over 1000 directories. You can also upgrade to automate the process even more for $10 a site.

Submission services are a little better but cost more. The best service i've come across was Submitedge. They have a very high acception rate. The last time i used their service i got accepted to 335 out of 350 directories. Also try looking on forums there's always people posting Directory submission services for allot cheaper then most company's that do this sort of work. Just make sure you do some research on the poster.

What Google did after it conducted an Update for PR and Backlinks in the month of October was that it made it mandatory to use the Google Adsense account whether you purchase or sell a link.People purchasing a link from a directory without the use of the Adsense account will not have it counted as a backlink when Google updates it and directory owners who sold links without the adsense account would have their ISP'S banned from Google.

Now for those who are going in for free submissions.It makes no sense to do bulk submissions when you know that it would take up indefinite amount of time to get the reviewal of a moderator and then get the approval.What one should do is to opt for a category that one relates too and has the minimum amount of submissions.Say you have 10 keywords and you relate well to them ,but you prefer 2 amongst them.So even if the prefered category has a greater number of submissions pending,it would be wise to skip the category and opt for another term that you relate too.This helps,since the category with lesser number of pending reviewals will have the submission reviewed quickly compared to a category that has a greater number of submission pending.
My personal opinion is for those who are into free submission opt for social bookmarking or networking sites.These sites have maximum traffic and in that case if your content/article whatever you post is appealing and is of quality your visitor/traffic rate will improve.
