Some theme creators will save their work with multiple folders in order to put some extra stuff inside where it can be found. For example:
xyzthemeversion2/xyztheme/images,style,forum

make sure that when you upload it through ftp that you are in the root of the new theme.

The other thing to take note of is the version and patch of the offered theme. Some themes have to ported to a certain patch for your website. For example, most themes wont work for evo patched nuke sites unless they are ported for ACO compliancy.

well i know that my webhost provides phpnuke 7.9 so does that mean ill neeed to look for themes that are for the 7.9 version and when i upload through ftp i select the whole folder and place it in the themes directory so when i open it through cpanel it looks like a normal theme with folders inside.

Correct. But the usual problem you are having is not typically that, its the way you uploaded your files. Like I said make sure you have uploaded them carefully under the themes folder in root. Also, make sure you are queing them through ftp, not copying them. Drag and drop is copying, you don't want that. What you want to do is select the folder to be uploaded and then "que" it into the folder. I don't know about your particular ftp program you are using but you might see "que" if you right click on your selected folder. Or you might find Que in the drop down menus.
