On a site I'm working on at the moment, there's a page where I've got a word cloud (tag cloud), which on this site is simply a graphic. While putting it together though I was trying to find an easier way to do it than faffing around changing font sizes and colours etc. and wondered if there was any way of automating it. While trying to find an easier way of doing it, I found a number of sites which will generate a tag cloud from a web page, and a number that let you link the tags used in the finished tag cloud to a particular web page. A number of the tag cloud generator sites mentioned using them for
SEO.
I was vaguely contemplating using a tag cloud on a future site (not particularly for
SEO purposes), but I'm wondering if tag clouds would make any difference, or whether you could potentially get penalised for them - after all, as far as a search engine can see, all it is is a load of words that don't bear much of a relationship to each other - it's not text that's written in sentence form, and if each word's linked to the same web page, would it be classed as link spamming or otherwise get you into trouble with the search engines?
