There is no "best" between the two. They are two different programming languages that do essentially the same thing. ASP works best on Windows platforms and works additionally with the .NET anatomy work. PHP is open source and was designed to be the ASP counterpart for the Linux platform.

PHP is more secure. ASP.NET is faster than PHP4. PHP5 and ASP.NET perform about the same. ASP.NET is known for exploits when running on IIS. PHP is cross-platform. ASP.NET is windows only. PHP is free and less costly to use. ASP.NET web hosting is very expensive. It really depends on what you want to do. What will be the size of this eCommerce site? For larger sites, ASP and Microsoft SQL are your best bet. MySQL is not suitable for large websites unless InnoDB or Merge tables are used, as well as proper database design.

I think PHP is the best tool than the ASP as it can make the powerful web site application wigth all kinds of latest tools and features. Also PHP is mainly used, free, and efficient substitute to competitors like Microsoft's ASP. Also it is server side scripting language and it is open source software.
