HTML is a great language to start off with but once you feel that you want to dive into PHP, I always recommend learning at myhosting.com/forums.

That is where I learned my HTML, CSS, and PHP even. I am still not a huge guru but I have the basics down and I think that is all you really need at my level and for my needs.

O'Reilly books are also a good learning source if you want to learn while away from the Computer for a change

Well,i think since it is the beginning you have to encounter such things. But after all, what you need is to understand them fully. The first time i went to tutor i was like, what's these! looking like incorrect numbers.little did i knew that all will be well.

w3schools is the best resource but the best way to learn is by editing plug-ins or open source programs & working on creating a program from scratch.
