protect files from direct access

Hello

for a new homepage im in need to protect certain files to be accessed directly, so they cant be "stolen" and implemented in other websites.

e.g.: i want the users to browse through image galleries, but those images should not be accessed from outside the website. (so other webmaster cant steal the link to save their own traffic)

or: i want the users to watch video clips, but i dont want that other webmaster can implement those files in their own page to save traffic.

this stuff is done by some bigger download-centers like zdnet, fileplanet etc.

webserver will run linux/gnu and use apache as webserver. language will be php

for tips how to achieve this i would be very thankfully.
