Default Help needed with php problem after upgrade

We have been using List Messenger to send out 5 newsletters for about 2 years and it has performed flawlessly until about 6 weeks ago, when we upgraded to the latest Apache and PHP.
From then on, sending the list has caused massive server spikes, because messages hang on the server, and the only way we have been able to reduce the load is by upping the RAM to 4Gigs.
We have tried sending via both php & Sendmail and the result is the same.
Any advice on changing settings in php or Apache to cure this would be greatly appreciated. Two of the lists are 6000+ addys and we are having to pause for 15 mins every 20%, so it is making for a very long working day.
