Default FTP questions, help needed

I want to learn ftp and for some reason, it's very extremely difficult for me.

I understand basic html and can create a simple website with text and graphics, and tables, but the only html editor I've ever worked with is the one at Geocities.

I'm trying to learn ftp by using the existing Microsoft Front Page 4.0 that came with Win XP when I bought the disk. I signed up for a free hosting service that doesn't have the easy editor like Geocities does, so I can practice learning there.

My goal right now is to get something up on my new website, even if it's just a one simple word. When I click to "publish" in Front Page, it does ask me for the server, and I'm pretty positive I have the right one, but it tells me that the server disconnected me every time. It never asks me for a password to get onto my site, which I think is suspicious. I can't find a place in Front Page to enter my site's password, either in the program itself or on the Front Page website, which tells a lot about all the stuff you can do in Front Page, but nothing about ftp.

I'm not against downloading a freeware program to learn the basics on, but the few mentions about ftp in the tutorials seem to indicate that some editors aren't compatible with some host sites. How can I find out which one I should be using if Front Page isn't enough for me? I'm afraid I'll download and learn one that's obsolete or something.

Anyone?????

I would suggest not using Front Page! It is kind of a pain in the ass to learn, but if you create your sites in notepad to start out, you will be sooo much better off in the long run. Go to htmlgoodies and w3schools and learn the basics of HTML, then XHTML, then CSS. For a freeware FTP program I would suggest FileZilla. To get the simplest possible thing up on the screen create a file called index.html in notepad and copy this code:
Code:
<html> <head> <title>My First Page</title> </head> <body> <p>This is my first web page!</p> </body> </html>
Then enter your server details into FileZilla. You simply drag the page from the left side which represents the files on your computer to the right side which represents the files on the server. Good Luck.
