Default Carbonite & Others: Why Must Mirror Image Backup be Local?OnlW

Hi-
I use a laptop exclusively (160 GB hard drive), have no desktop. As my drive is small and pretty much full, any Carbonite image would have to go to an external hard drive. Although I now use these for manual backup, I have no desire to be tethered to one, which would seem necessary to allow for mirror image backup via Carbonite. (If I am wrong here, please let me know.)
My question is this: Why doesn't Carbonite or any other service allow remote storage of mirror images? (Guessing there is an obvious answer that will make me feel really stupid...
Thanks.
Frank
