Hi folks,

I've just put an online backup solution in place for a small business. They are running carbonite backup, backing up about 10Gb of daily changing data. This seems to be fine presently, but my query is regarding a MSSQL system they also need backed up.

This is included in their local backups, but it would be needed in their online backups should they have a failure. The problem is the SQL data is ~2Gb, ~400Mb compressed. I'm using SQLBackupAndFTP to take a daily backup for their local backup schedule. If I back this up daily, Carbonite would need to upload ~400Mb daily which is not going to complete.

Given that their other data is also changing daily, would a 1 week online backup of the SQL make sense?

I think you should use an offline backup. Much easier to control on your end, especially since you are dealing with only 10 GB of daily data. Not a lot.

There are multiple ways of providing backup for your customer. We provide Complex Hosting/DR/HA Solutions so we run into these type of issues all the time. Your customer is currently running MS SQL Svr one thing I would suggest is setting up a remote site to act as DR in the case of failure of the primary customer site.

Depending on the version and how important the data is to the customer. As an example we have HIPPA customers that can't suffer any data loss so they are in a complete HA/DR structure to ensure that.

No company wants data loss but the level of acceptable data loss makes a big difference on the solution.
