There is a big difference between the two when it comes to file retention (how far you need to go back in time to restore a file), resource utilization (CPU, RAM, bandwidth), and what you need to backup.

I'm an IT consultant and I use "Tomahawk Backup" for my clients which are mostly small businesses. It is a business class service made for backing up applications, databases, file servers, etc. (and PC's too if you want). Low utilization and you can keep "deleted" files up to 3 years.

For my personal systems I also use SugarSync. If you have multiple computers it does a nice job keeping them in sync. It's on my laptop, work computer and home computer and it keeps all the files and folder structures the same on all which is awesome if you computer hop like that. I don't have to email myself files anymore and I know exactly where everything is no matter what computer I'm using.

If you only have one computer, go with a online backup service, and I recommend periodically backing up locally to USB as well.

+ To have the same data set on more than one computer.
+ It's possible to make a boot drive.
+ If you backup to a NAS you can access all your computer files from over the Internet.

Backup
+ Compression.
+ Encrypted archives.
+ File history – same file with different snapshot dates.

Backup: this function allows data being "backed up/ copied". It makes sure the newest data is backed up on your external. Older files or deleted files are moved in history (located in your FreeAgent offcourse). I really like this function because deleted files can be found again. Also when I edit a document, the old version can also be found.

Sync: in computing synching is the process of making sure that two or more locations contain the same up-to-date files. If you add, change, or delete a file from one location, the synchronization process will add, change, or delete the same file at the other location.

Now, you should choose the solution based on your requirement.

I really like it for the ability to sync multiple computers and most file types (can't sync PST's). It has some quirks about it, but overall it is solid. Not a business class backup solution by any means, but for an individual, it's great.
