Some people like to use external hard drives as backup. Not a terrible idea, but what if somthing happens to the hard drive? Fire, Stolen, Lost etc. The clear advantage to a true is clear. Check out backazon.com, that's what I use. Also remember, most "backup" sites are only sync, so if you delete something on your comp, its gone from your backup. A TRUE backup is never deleted unless you delete it from the backup personally.

I would imagine that having online backup is cheaper and easier than having to set up raids to keep your information from being destroyed in the event of a hard drive failure... or constantly backing up to disk or something.... and hard drive failures are quite common... I mean most seem only built to last about 2 years with moderate use...

Online providers of a backup service would do all of that for you... keep your data... and backup your data... and serve it to you anytime you need it...even years from now when you have forgotten it or upgraded your computer...or had to format because of a virus...all you files are still in tact... to download to your new computer!

Forgetting business for a moment... I mean just on a personal level... you could have on your computer pictures from your digital camera of your kids growing up and lose them all with a virus or hard drive crash... I mean who even has a permanent record of things anymore....I don't run to the photo place every week with new pics...I just put them in a folder... but pow...years of memories gone if the hard drive dies... or you could have all the songs you transferred from cd and downloaded years ago then threw away and remember that time that you stayed up all night for weeks trying to remember every song you ever heard to download on limewire / gnutella and other peer to peer software..could all destroyed just like that!

That's why I choose online backup over externals. I dont mind the fact that it takes a bit more time if my data is safe. I know if I lost all of my pictures, I wouldn't be a happy camper. Memories like that are hard to replace.

More to the point though, which in your opinion is better? Sync or true backup? Not a fan of sync like the major sites offer because if I delete a file on accident and my comp backs up on schedule, I will lose that file in my back also.

Backup is just good sense...like insurance for your belongings.
To your question, true backup is preferable.
