Default Remote backup of large files?

I'm convinced that remote backup is the way to go but as far as I'm aware, all the lower priced services cannot do sub-file backups, i.e., only backup the part of a file that has changed. The issue is with the likes of Outlook pst files which can get pretty big, well over 1GB, which means backing up the whole file each time.

While this may not be a problem for those with ultra fast connections and unlimited bandwidth, it is an issue for those of us with limited upload speeds and monthly data quotas.

Was therefore wondering, is there such a thing as a program that can do a sub-file/bitstream backup of large files to the local PC and then just back up this smaller file and perhaps do a full backup once a month?

Or any other solutions to this issue?

Thanks in anticipation,

I believe a NAS (Networked Attached Storage) would solve this situation. A NAS basically plugs straight into your router and is remoteley accessible.

You can also forward incoming port 80 traffic to a static internal IP and if you don't have a static IP with your ISP then you can use Dynamic DNS to access the files off site.

I couldn't agree more. NAS is the best one to be fit for your need.

Would still have to backup large files to the VPS so how does this help?

Well it all depends on how fast your connection is. It is no problem for me but if your connection is slow, then do not take my suggestion.

Depends how much you are willing to spend. Most paid online backup service providers perform differential backups of your data and only upload the portion of your files that have changed (your outlook.pst file only changes by the few emails you receive each day for instance).

If you want to manage an offsite backup solution yourself you can setup a simple linux box to transfer your data to with rsync. There are plenty of tutorials about this. Google search for "rsync tutorial".

Yes. NAS and other back up services really depends on you connection as well as the money you want to spend.

Another option would be to uses the archieve function of Outlook.

If you set it to archieve documents of say a month old then you will generate a 2nd pst file.

The primary will be all email for the last month, but very small and the archieve will be the bigger one.

You will still see your emails as you currently are, they wont dissapear from your outlook but it means the archive file wont change size, and therefore will only backup once.

The smaller outlook file will backup as normal and in full, but will take no time at all.

the other option is to remove the pst file from the list of backups, and just add it again once a week/month dependant upon how important your mail is and let it run overnight just to make sure you have everything backed up at least over a week old.

Just a few thoughts
