I would be very careful about this type of backup method. Most web hosts have clauses in their contracts specifically forbidding the use of your storage space for file backups.

If you have a web site that you care about, I would hate to see your account get deleted overnight over something so trivial. (To make matters worse, they would also be deactivating your primary backup device)

Some other potential downsides would be that a web server backup would not give you the ability to perform point-in-time recovery, and the uploads would take forever because you don't have block-level incrementals.

But who knows, maybe I'm wrong and this will work just fine. I wish you the best of luck. Let me know how it goes.

yep, its cheaper alright, but a bit difficult in implementing, i have not tried but read on an article

for Photos, definitely go to Shutterfly.com . You don't have to pay to have your photos up there. In the event of a fire, at least you know all your photos are on a server somewhere else.

for Linux or Cygwin users, 'wput' can be easily scripted to save files to the ftp server of your webhost. This is not ideal for large files with small changes occurring daily though. a service provider that can provide an 'rsync' compatible service would be better.
