There is no guarantee that anything is secure. Your external could be stolen, lost, or destroyed. The chances of that happening are less likely with an online backup though.

Well I backup via cPanel, don't you have cPanel?

I use backzon.com, its cheap and works well. I dont like the idea of hardware backups for some reason. They just worry me.
