I see a tracking link on each of them, so I assume that the referral will probably earn him as much money as them purchasing the pixel space from him directly.

In my opinion, the pixel grid idea is only a witty and original idea once. I've seen it imitated so many times (with varying success) but there is no real variation on the original. "It's a tried and tested idea" you might say, but that's because it had never been done before.

My question to the threadstarter is, how did you innovate from the original and create a brand new, marketable gimmick from which to earn money?

I remembered the "milliondollarhomepage" and it is a different gimmick to earn money . You can add the website logo and by clicking the ads, you can win a dollars. Is there any website become successful on this milliondollarhomepage?

Yes, the original creator of the idea filled every single space, thus becoming a millionaire. He made a blog about it (I do not have the link to hand) and I remember hearing that he had his hosting costs sponsored by a local business.

I am not sure what he's doing now. Probably coming up with more crackpot ideas!

There you go! He's now taking on other ideas, one of which is rather big (in his words). He has a very infectious confidence, I have to say. It takes a lot to come up with things like this that could very easily fail.
