Ahh The Windows Linux debate. I've used both actually and depending on what you want to do with your site, both are well-supported by the Web hosts.
The security patch issue for Windows was bothersome but it's way better now.
That's not to say Linux was exempt from any security issues.
There are excellent Web hosting plans on both platforms.
Linux Web Hosting is safe, secure and there is no or very little cost involved and support is also easily available from the Web Hosting Provider. However at last it all boils down to what are your website's basic hosting requirements and accordingly you select Linux Web Hosting or a Windows Web Hosting plan. For Web Hosting Providers it makes no difference as they are well equipped to provide support for both Web Hosting platforms.
