Don't pay for it. Just get a free Distro. Ubuntu is good, and what I'm using.

Hi there,

Most Linux Distros are free to download . I got Suse 10.1(as free download) and 9.3 . I took Suse as i am still in the experimental Stage on Linux ...but managed to be a regular user by now. Fedora is another good Choice and Ubuntu (which has Gnome as default desktop environment ) or Kubuntu (that has KDE as desktop environment as default ) . Both of them can be ordered online free and will be shipped to you free too . Debian is a bit difficult for beginnners i found ...but that was awhile ago so things mostlikely have changed there. I tried Mandrake Linux too (now it is called mandriva) i found it also quite decent .
Hope that helps you with your choice,

I've used Ubuntu for almost a year, but I didn't like Gnome look very much.
I tried Kubuntu and I really, really liked it.
By the way, you can get as many DVDs shipped to your home at no cost (same goes for Ubuntu). Request them at shipit.kubuntu.org

Well I would recomend by starting by a easy disto like mandriva or Fedora then moving on to a more advance but more stable like Vlos or ubuntu. I would recomend starting by buying a book with a distribution on it like fedora for dummies you can get it at amazon

I myself am a gentoo user. It's quite customizable.....so much so that setup takes a few hours to an experienced user.

but don't let that scare you from it, because after setup, you'll have learned quite a lot about linux (if you're new to it)

if you'd just like to get your feet wet, fedora core 4 is pretty easy to start out with.

you don't need to pay to get any distro, if you are planning to use suse you could try opensuse, if you want red hat try using fedora core

but like some have mentioned above the best way to start using linux may be installing ubuntu, there is a real good guide at http://ubuntuguide.org/, now it is easier than ever to install it and you can just try it as a livecd, i say give it a shot!
