Default Windows vs. Linux

In this months issue at Forbes, Forbes interviews an employee of Microsoft who's goal is to get rid of Linux.

It is a rather entertaining article.

Linux went from being a name M$ barely knew, to being its biggest competitor.

Because of the dislike of M$ that exists throughout the web, people are turning to linux as their main provider. Because it is free and an open source project, it gives the best of both worlds.

If Linux is making M$ shake in their boots, I bet open source is the wave of the future.

Linux currently has a 6% market share, which is more than Apple. With their growth patterns, I suspect linux to take over the server industry. With linux being implemented on desktops, there is no telling what the future will hold.

I tell you what though, I am backing linux. All of our dual xeons run Linux. If linux ever unifies and offers an IPO, I know that I will invest

What do you think?

Windows have got far less number of developers than Linux. That explains pretty much about Linux being feature rich and fastest evolving OS.

Im a proud linux user and I would die for it. What I see coming up for the future is a OS war where linux or some other OS hopefully opensource will win.

Well, linux sure has some advantages considering safety and stuff.
Yet, Windows, until now, is much more compatible to software and hardware. With Linux, you often have to change preferences in the core (the raw text dialogs I mean). Therefore many users would have to learn how to do that.
This shows, that, Windows is still easier to handle, which will be a big argument.

But it is good to see that Linux is working on the User Accessability, by having KDE.

I have used linux in the past before and I liked it, but for now windows is still easier to use. But when Linux gets as easy or easier to use for mainstream non tech savvy people it will win out. The difference I have seen in it from when I last used it about 6 years ago and what i saw on a friends a few weeks back it has made huge steps towards this goal and given some time im sure we will see even more

i've used both windows and linux, and i'm not really going to say that one is better than the other. they both have their ups and downs. like here:

for windows.. it's not too bad, but not that good. first, it's not so customizable. for example the themes.. windows doesn't allow you to change much in the way your desktop looks. you easily get bored out of it. of course, all those patches and software could be downloaded to make this possible, but why not microsoft just implement it in there? another thing is about speed at times. when it lags, it lags. no doubt.

the worst with windows is the pricing. it's way too high (i've never bought a legit copy myself and i admit that.. but it's not illegal here to nevermind that).
another annoying part has to do with updates.. now you can't easily update anymore without that genuine windows validation whatever. it's a pain. of course i can't update anymore.. why? because my copy ain't original. i can't even download new software like media player 11 or the like. they force you to do what they want you to do.

the last would be security.. nobody worries much nowadays but windows computers ARE highly vulnerable. they haven't reached top levels yet.

-

now for linux.. it's the most flexible operating system i have ever seen. you could do basically everything you want with it. you could change the looks as you like, colours, sizes, everything. you could simply download themes and set them up. little widgets are very cool too.

with linux, it's all free. no one has to worry about any costs. it comes with tons of applications that you can use, PLUS you can download tons more from the internet. it's just wonderful.
the bad part about it though, is that it's not too easy.. the installation process. if you're not willing to search and learn, then linux would be a pain when it comes to installing software. you need to mess with shell and all. not so quick. then you'd encounter problems with missing modules and stuff. very annoying at times.

-

i'm 100% pro linux servers. no windows. linux is great for servers. for personal use, i prefer a mix of windows and linux. both on the same disk. it does the job quite well.
switching between the two would take a few minutes maybe? so what? i could slip in a few sit-ups or a sandwich.
