I know what Linux has to do to increase its popularity. Linux is gonna have more games... modern games like Windows does.
Because most of people use PC for Games only.

They both have cons ans pros. It depends a lot on culture and ultimately the use you will give the box.

I really hope that this rivalry continues between them because that will keep them in a faster improving pase.

I use Ubuntu Linux because it is free... comes with great software, easy to use, and of course... they send out free discs for those of use with dial up! wooo
I also got discs of Edubuntu and Kubuntu... They are both great.

Ubuntu is easier to use than linux, kubuntu has some better apps than ubuntu... and neither of them work with my modem. So sorry, they're not my full time OS. I use xp and will be upgrading to Vista as soon as I can convince my father to fork over 400 dollars for ultimate edition

Will be fun and tough to have to put up with a new OS but it will just increase my knowledge.

As said above, both have cons and pros.
I'd say a dual boot system is the best. Windows for games and Linux for the rest (well, mostly). lol.

I run both LinuX and WinDows, because a lot of programs just don't run under LinuX

The first post in this thread seemed to focus more on servers than work stations, but if you are looking for the best of all worlds (Unix flexibility, but with ease of use, and the ability to run Windows if you want to), a new Intel based Mac has it all. Most open source software available will compile on Mac OX X, or someone has already compiled it. The OS X interface is far better refined than any of the Linux interfaces like Gnome, and with an Intel based machine, you can use Parallels Desktop to load and run Windows in a virtual environment with only minimal loss of performance.

I regularly use Windows, Linux and Mac OS machines. I use the Mac for most tasks from email/internet browing to software development (embedded software using cross compiling with GCC). With the new Intel Macs, the power of this combination in a single machine still hasn't quite caught on, but Apple has a truely compelling product now.

Oh, and if you really need Linux, you can run that in Parallels Desktop as well as a 2nd virtual machine. I have done this in the past with Virtual PC on PowerPC based Macs, but performance wasn't great. It's the change to the Intel processors for Apples that makes the difference because Windows/Linux code can now run natively, no emulation.

Uhhhhhh.... a massive amount of "end user software" that is completely file compatable would help a lot, too.....

for example.... I make my living using AutoCAD... which only runs on Windows... so --unless I want to spend YEARS mastering a new CAD package-- Plus all the investment in software --I'm stuck

I realize "serious end user apps that people actually use to make a living with" is a minor factor in terms of spreading Linux than.... "we need more games like doom"... but I can't help think that if the significant end user apps were there.... it wouldn't be for servers anymore....

Don't talk to me about "OpenOffice/StarOffice, Gimp and Blender.... Good software, but the big time cross compatability isn't there yet...

And Believe.... I'd LOVE to drive the final nail in Microsofts Coffin.... I HATE Windoze, and Microsoft even more... one of the most disgusting enterprises ever created
